Findings on Data Center Energy Consumption Growth May Already Exceed EPA’s Prediction Through 2010!
New Uptime Institute research shows data center energy consumption in the top third of sites researched grew 20-30 percent annually in 2006 and 2007. This far exceeds the EPA's prediction of 9 percent growth from 2006 to 2010. If current data center power consumption continues to grow at the current rate, 10 new cola-fired or nuclear power plants will be needed by 2010 and 20 more (for a total of 30) by 2015. Available online are preliminary findings of this new research, which was presented March 13 at the Ziff-Davis 2008 Data Center Summit and will be included in a McKinsey & Company/Uptime Institute report titled Revolutionizing Data Center Energy Efficiency to be released April 30 at the Institute Symposium: Green Enterprise Computing.
