Institute Research Report: Three Imperatives Executive Summary |
Three Imperatives for Making Data Center Efficiency a C-suite Priority
Part of Revolutionizing Data Center Efficiency: The Path Forward, Volume IV. Lessons from Uptime Institute’s IT Symposium 2009—Lean, Clean & Green
This paper summarizes some of the key themes presented by the Uptime Institute at the fourth annual Green Enterprise IT Symposium: LEAN, CLEAN & GREEN. Growing data center electricity use burdens the economics of IT, presents challenges for energy supply security, and contributes to environmental problems. The industry has begun to make progress in the areas of increasing virtualization and killing comatose servers, appointing “Energy Czars”, buying efficient IT hardware, and counting total costs of ownership. However, there are many challenges yet to be overcome, and no “silver bullets.” Key industry players have already demonstrated that great improvements in efficiency can be achieved, at a profit, but many companies still find it difficult to get energy efficiency the C-level attention that it needs to become a priority. Organizations are encouraged to raise energy efficiency a C-level issue, make firm internal (or external) commitments, and—above all—simply get started on The Path Forward.
